Business Blogging 101

Everyone seems to be familiar with the concept of blogging these days.  Whether you digg, tweet and follow your favorites, or you’ve just started looking for a way voice your message.  Either way, you should know that it’s important for every business owner and website marketer to have a blog.

Adding a blog to your company’s website is one of the most effective ways to communicate with your customers, position yourself as an expert in your field, build your brand, and drive traffic to your website.

Many of my customers ask, “What in the world would I blog about?” The answer is everything and anything that relates to your business. It’s not about writing essays or lengthy articles. You might post one or two paragraphs announcing a new product or service. It might be a helpful article or important news story relating to your field. Did you have a patient or customer ask you a very important or common question today? Post it! Chances are others are asking that very same question!

Here are a few simple tips to keep in mind when writing your blog posts:

  • Keep It Simple Silly! When in doubt use the K-I-S-S method. Start by sticking with one simple idea or piece of information. People are more likely to read and retain just a few paragraphs so don’t be afraid to keep it short.
  • Include photos or screenshots as examples. Photos attract interest and screenshots illustrate examples. (Don’t know how to take a screenshot? Email me & I will tell you how!)
  • Engage your audience. Your blog (and website) should be a living breathing thing, so invite your readers to join the conversation. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, hold contests, or post surveys. It’s a great way to get to know your customers and show them you’re listening!
